Before Wash Day — Prep (Day Before)
Prep Checklist
- Detangle hair gently with fingers or wide-tooth comb
- Section hair into 4 parts with clips or twists
- Do a pre-poo treatment (oil, conditioner, or hair mask)
- Cover with a plastic cap overnight to let treatment penetrate
- Gather all your products so you're not hunting mid-wash
What Is Pre-Poo and Why Does It Matter?
Pre-poo (pre-shampoo) is an oil or conditioner treatment you apply before washing. It protects your hair from losing too much moisture during shampooing and makes detangling much easier. Best oils for pre-poo: coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil.
Step 1 — Shampoo
Shampoo Checklist
- Wet hair thoroughly with warm water
- Apply shampoo to scalp (not length)
- Massage scalp gently in circular motions for 2–3 minutes
- Let shampoo rinse down the length — don't scrub ends
- Rinse thoroughly until water runs clear
- Repeat if needed (oily scalp or heavy product buildup)
Step 2 — Deep Condition
Deep Condition Checklist
- Apply deep conditioner from roots to tips
- Use fingers or wide-tooth comb to distribute evenly
- Cover with a plastic cap
- Sit under a hooded dryer or use body heat for 20–45 min
- Rinse with cool water to seal the cuticle
Moisture vs Protein — Which Does Your Hair Need?
If your hair feels mushy, gummy, or stretches a lot before breaking — you need protein. If it feels dry, brittle, and breaks with no stretch — you need moisture. Log this in your hair journal after every wash day and you'll find your personal pattern within 2 months.
Step 3 — Leave-In & Styling
Styling Checklist
- Gently squeeze out excess water (no rubbing with towel)
- Apply leave-in conditioner section by section
- Apply styling product (gel, cream, butter) while hair is wet
- Style as desired — twist out, braid out, wash and go, etc.
- Allow to air dry or use a diffuser on low heat
Step 4 — After Wash Day Care
After Wash Day Checklist
- Sleep on a satin pillowcase or wear a satin bonnet
- Do not manipulate hair while drying — let it set
- Log your wash day in your hair journal (products used, how hair felt)
- Rate the results — did this routine work well?
- Note anything to change next time
How Often Should You Have a Wash Day?
This depends entirely on your hair type and scalp:
- Oily scalp / fine hair: Every 5–7 days
- Normal scalp / medium hair: Every 7–10 days
- Dry scalp / thick/coily hair: Every 10–14 days
Track your wash days in HairCareTracker and you'll quickly find your ideal frequency — your hair will tell you through your daily check-in logs.
